EDWARD HOPPER: ALIENATION AND SUBJUGATION by ROSALIND MIRANDA, WEDNESDAY, 4 MARCH. Edward Hopper is acknowledged as the most important American realist painter of the 20th C. His work demonstrates that realism is not merely a literal or photographic copying of what we see, but an interpretive rendering. At 40, Hopper was a failure who couldn’t sell a painting. CÉSAR MANRIQUE CABRERA by Angela Chantry, WEDNESDAY, 8 APRIL. César Manrique Cabrera (1919-1992): described as the man “building paradise in the ruins of hell”. He was a Spanish painter, sculptor and artist, best known for his architectural projects. He was one of the foremost exponents of contemporary art in the Canary Islands and a reference in the relationship between art, nature and landscape. Manrique was awarded, among others, the World Prize for Ecology and Tourism and the Europa Prize.
