After a successful committee meeting, a quick swim and breakfast, the European Union of Women Marina Alta identified their next campaign: Using your vote! Emmeline Pankhurst was arrested seven times before women in Britain won the vote. She went on hunger strike, was released when her health broke and was re-arrested as soon as she recovered. She died on 14 June 1928. Eighteen days later, Parliament gave women the vote on the same terms as men, and she never cast one under it. In Spain, Clara Campoamor won that right in 1931 and Spanish women voted for the first time in 1933.
Next year will see both local elections and national elections here in Spain and across many countries in Europe. Check with your Town Hall here to see if you are on the ‘Padron’ and if you are entitled to vote. If yes, register on the Electoral register NOW! On Sunday 23 May 2027, we choose our local councils here in the Marina Alta. This is the tier of government closest to us. It shapes the roads and pavements we use, the buildings, parks, sports grounds and libraries we pay for, the social services a family turns to in a crisis, and the help available to a woman who needs it. Councils listen to the people on the electoral roll. A community that is not on it is not counted.
So register on the ‘Padron’ and then the Electoral Roll and then use your vote!
