As the European Union of Women Marina Alta works to inform women of all nationalities in this area about women’s issues, we were surprised to read the latest report of the Poverty and Living Condition indicators at the subregional level 2025, published by the Valencian Institute of Statistics (IVE).

Here, in the area with individual swimming pools and an abundance of restaurants, the Marina Alta has the second-highest poverty risk rate in the entire Valencia Region. The Report highlights the practical difficulties in meeting basic living standards, such as paying bills, covering unexpected expenses, or accessing essential goods and services. ‘We try to play our part’, said secretary Kathleen Misson. ‘We have just held a conference about women growing old and how to obtain support when you need it. In the autumn we will be working on a small project to look at accessibility to essential services for those with mobility issues’.
The organisation held a delightful evening ‘Girls just wanna have fun’ in Javea, including rounds of Mini Golf (see photo) with prizes! Other events being planned are poetry with Clasicas y Modernas in Benitachell and activities for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. All will be made welcome. If you don’t speak Spanish you will be helped with interpreters. It’s really important we all understand the issues and support each other.
